Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has revealed he would be willing to represent Spain at the 2020 Olympic Games. The 32-year-old last played for Spain at the 2018 World Cup in Russia after which he decided to retire after being booed and jeered during the tournament. Spain’s fans hit out at the former Manchester United man after he voiced his support for the Catalonia region’s bid for independence.
He has made 10 appearances for Catalonia since 2004, and he was part of the team that beat Venezuela 2-1 back in April.
Despite stepping away from Spanish duties, the centre-back has claimed he could be open to playing for the national team at the Games in Tokyo next summer. Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos has also declared that he could play, despite the fact the event starts just two weeks after the final of the 2020 European Championships.
Both Pique and Ramos now appear to be on good terms, and the former says he is thinking about a return. “You never know, you never know,” Pique said to Cadena SER. “In life, you don’t have to discard anything. I’ve never ruled out anything in life. It can happen. Why not? I don’t like to close the doors on anything.”
Pique could now add to his 102 Spain caps as well his international medal collection after already winning the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships.
The defender started Barca’s 5-1 win over Real Valladolid on Tuesday and is expected to retain his place in Ernesto Valverde’s side, who are top of the table, for Saturday’s La Liga clash at Levante.
