Mauricio Pochettino has slammed Jurgen Klopp after Liverpool defeated his Tottenham team to reach the EFL Cup quarter-final.
The 2-1 victory for Liverpool was sealed by two goals from under-pressure England striker Daniel Sturridge who spearheaded a much changed Liverpool team.
However, with the Reds 2-0 up and seemingly in control of the game, captain for the evening Lucas handed Spurs a route back into the tie by fouling substitute Erik Lamela inside the penalty area, allowing Vincent Janssen to score from the spot.
With 15 minutes remaining, Klopp’s team were again tasked with the challenge of clinging on for a victory. Pochettino, however, was unhappy with the Liverpool bench trying to influence the referee as his team pushed for an equaliser.
‘I think it was strange that at the end of the game they started to complain,’ Pochettino said after the game.
The complaints from the Liverpool bench angered the Spurs boss further, who believed youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold was lucky not to be sent off.
‘The full-back Arnold should be sent off in the first-half, I have seen the tackle again on Ben Davies,’ Pochettino added.
‘So after that, it was strange when their bench started to complain with our bench. It is the referee’s authority to say if it was a penalty or not. It was strange.
‘They complained about a normal game, but maybe yes, they were lucky to finish with eleven on the pitch.’
