Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched following an incident in which a pitch invader confronted Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
After Mykhaylo Mudryk’s stoppage-time equalizer against the Magpies in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal, a fan approached the Slovakian goalie. Before being led out by stewards, the fan seemed to taunt Dubravka.
The Newcastle player emerged from the incident unscathed. Referee Jarred Gillett had extensive discussions with the stewards and both managers before the penalty shootout in front of the visiting Magpies supporters.
According to The Mirror, it is now official that Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police are closely examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. So far, there have been no arrests made.
Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino denounced the person’s actions at his press conference following the game.
He said: “I didn’t see it but I listen afterwards. My opinion? Always, I think we need to be careful, the fans need to be careful. I don’t like this type of thing because it can put in danger the players.
“Of course, I am disappointed. I do not agree with this type of thing that happen in football here at Stamford Bridge. And I don’t agree if it happens in another stadium in England or around the world.
“I don’t agree with this type of thing because I think it is so dangerous and I hope it doesn’t happen again.”
