As part of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, the Premier League and its teams commemorated LGBTQ+ inclusiveness during this weekend’s games.
Since 2013, the campaign, according to the league, has “played an important role in driving conversations around LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.”
Many players chose to wear rainbow-themed laces as part of the campaign, while captains put on armbands in rainbow colors.
“During this period, the League and clubs will showcase the work they carry out year-round to embed equality, diversity and inclusion in everything they do,” the Premier League stated in a statement prior to the campaign.
This includes showcasing community and educational projects aimed at fostering dialogue and fostering allyship with LGBTQ+ populations, as well as a variety of events and material involving players, managers, and fans, reports Metro.
“The League hopes to bring about long-lasting change where everyone in the football community feels a sense of belonging by highlighting these initiatives.”
Out of the 20 Premier League captains, Morsy of Ipswich was the only one who did not wear a rainbow armband during the weekend.
The club emphasized their dedication to LGBTQ+ inclusivity and stated that they “proudly support” the Rainbow Laces campaign, while also stating that they “respected his decision,” which was made for religious reasons.
