Aston Villa defender, Ezri Konsa reportedly cancelled his holiday plans after he received the big news of his first international call-up for England.
The phone rang as Konsa drove on the M1, dreaming about sunshine and Dubai as the rain beat down on the windshield.
After his team’s victory over Fulham on Sunday, the Villa defender was on his way home, planning a vacation with his partner Ronni while the wipers whizzed.
Subsequently, he took the call from Ruth Corry, the FA Team Operations assistant, who broke the exciting news of his first international call-up.
The 26-year-old said as reported by the Daily Star: “I was literally driving home after my game on Sunday. It was raining and we were talking about going on holiday somewhere.
“Two minutes later, Ruth called me and she said I hope you have got no holidays booked and I said, ‘no’ – but I did – and she told me I was in the squad. I know Ruth really well – I worked with her at Charlton so she was really excited for me as well.
“Then I got a call from the gaffer. He was just congratulating me, telling me that I should come and enjoy myself, get to know the lads and go from there.”

At St George’s in Staffordshire, the holiday plans were postponed and the sunshine was replaced by gloomy skies as England are ready to play Malta and North Macedonia in their final Euro 2024 qualifying matches.
Konsa is the most recent member of this England team to rise from supposedly lower league teams to the top of the Premier League. Prior to playing at Brentford and Villa, he was also known for his stint at Charlton Athletic.
