PSG targets Wenger as Arsenal future continues to be shrouded in doubt

Paris Saint-Germain are considering making one last attempt to persuade Arsene Wenger to become their manager, according to The Sun.

Unai Emery’s job with the French giants is now under threat following their humiliating Champions League collapse against Barcelona.

And PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi is weighing up whether to try to tempt under-fire Arsenal boss Wenger to the Parc Des Princes.

Al-Khelaifi has been a long-term admirer of Wenger and has made several approaches in the past in an effort to take him to PSG.

But the Gunners manager has always rebuffed any attempts because he has maintained his loyalty to seeing out his contracts with Arsenal.

That 21-year stay in north London is under threat with growing unrest among the supporters that he has lost his way in charge of the team.

Wenger is still to decide whether he wants to sign the new two-year contract on the table at the Emirates Stadium – and crucially now the club want to be part of any decision over his future.

Never before has the 67-year-old been more available to other clubs, and PSG know they may never have a better chance to finally get their man.

The hierarchy at the club are understood to be far from impressed with current boss Emery after watching the side implode in Barcelona this week.

Leading 4-0 from the first leg the team looked in a state of panic for most of the match as Barca went on to win 6-1 to seal one of the greatest comebacks of all time.

It has left the Spaniard’s position hanging in the balance and Al-Khelaifi would happily axe his boss if he could get Wenger in as a replacement.

Arsenal yesterday took the unusual step of issuing a statement to clarify their position in an attempt to appease supporters increasingly frustrated at the club’s displays this season.

But they stopped short of offering their full backing to the manager and pointedly insisted they would have a say in what happens this summer – not just Wenger.

And with the boss admitting for the first time that the calls for him to quit will have some influence on his decision to stay or go, PSG could provide the ideal escape route.
