Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly seeking to sign Lionel Messi to a new contract at the Parc des Princes.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s current contract is up at the end of the season, although PSG can trigger a 12-month extension until the summer of 2024.
Messi has failed to find his best form since leaving Barcelona, and rumours of a return to Camp Nou have lingered.
Both Xavi and Joan Laporta have talked about the possibility of Messi returning to Barcelona, while economic vice-president Eduard Romeu has stated that the operation would be financially viable.
However, Xavi has subsequently changed his tune and called for “peace” amid the rumours surrounding Messi, who has been in excellent form for Les Parisiens this season.
As per Le Parisien, the Ligue 1 champions want to sign a new deal with the 35-year-old after being impressed by his performances in training and on the field.
According to the report, president Nasser Al-Khelaifi considers Messi to be a “pleasure” to work with, and football advisor Luis Campos agrees.
However, PSG promised to paying Messi £35m each season upon his arrival in the French capital, and the financial aspect of his extension might throw a wrench in the works.
Christophe Galtier’s team recorded losses of up to £305m in the most recent fiscal year, making them wary about maintaining the Argentine’s huge wage.
While Messi is yet to get a formal contract offer, the report adds that PSG will at least offer him a one-year option, but he will not make any decisions on his future until after the World Cup.

Messi has now made 49 appearances for PSG, scoring 20 goals and setting up 25 more since joining in 2021, and he helped Les Parisiens win the Ligue 1 title with four games to spare last season.
