Pundit claims Mourinho considering making Ibrahimovic next Man United captain

Paul Parker has claimed that Jose Mourinho would be open to making Zlatan Ibrahimovic his next captain at Manchester United.

There has been plenty of speculation about Wayne Rooney’s long-term future at Old Trafford following his lack of playing time so far this season.

It remains to be seen whether the current Manchester United captain will still be at the club at the start of next season.

Mourinho will have been giving some thought about who could succeed Rooney as a captain in the long-term at Manchester United.

Former Manchester United man Parker feels that Mourinho would be happy to hand the armband to Ibrahimovic but warned that the Portuguese coach needs to pick a long-term successor to Rooney.

Speaking to 888sport, Parker said: “It does need someone to step up and take it on, someone the others will look to and believe in their captain.

“I’m sure Mourinho would give it to Ibrahimovic because those two are joined at the hip but it needs someone more long-term who the fans and players respect as a leader.

“It has to be a player whose name is written in stone on the team sheet.”

Mourinho will be hoping to guide Manchester United to their first major trophy of the season when they take on Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
