Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville stated that the club needed to sign two players in the summer transfer window in order to challenge for the Premier League title.
Erik ten Hag’s start to the new season has been the most disappointing possible, with only two victories in United’s first five Premier League games.
The Red Devils’ 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday added salt to injury, moving them down to 13th in the standings.
This is true even though recruits like Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Ramus Hojlund, Altay Bayindir, and Jonny Evans cost £176.9 million. While Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat arrived on loan.
However, Neville, a former United defender, believes they ought to add Declan Rice and Harry Kane if they wanted to contend for the league title this campaign.
On his own podcast for Sky Sports, Neville explained: “I was worried at the start of the season.
“There was this feeling Manchester United had got their business done early in the transfer window and that was good.
“But I was concerned the players they had brought in wouldn’t improve them from last season.
“I never thought for one second they would challenge Manchester City and Arsenal from the players they brought in.
“That would have needed a Harry Kane-type signing or Declan Rice, as an example. They didn’t have the money to do those types of signings.”

Over the course of the summer, both players were linked to United, but they were outbid for their services.
In the end, West Ham agreed to sell Rice to Arsenal for a club-record sum of £105 million.
Bayern Munich meanwhile, reportedly paid £86 million to sign Kane.
