Pundits Clash Over Arsenal Goalkeeping Situation

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher and former Manchester United hero, Peter Schmeichel disagree over the best goalkeeper to be between the sticks for Arsenal.

Before the end of the summer transfer window, Mikel Arteta’s side swooped for David Raya on loan from Brentford in order to provide competition for Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale started the Gunners’ first four fixtures but was dropped to the bench in favour of Raya in their last two games.

With the Spaniard’s display against PSV Eindhoven in Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League opener, Carragher claimed that the north-London club will never win the Premier League with Ramsdale as their first-choice shot-stopper.

Schmeichel on the other hand refused to agree with his fellow Pundit claim.

During their game’s coverage on CBS Sports as cited by Football London, Schmeichel questioned his colleague. He said: “Do you think Raya is a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale? Because I don’t.”

Carragher then replied: “100 per cent (Raya is better). Arsenal will never win the league with Ramsdale in goal, no chance.”

The Champions League winner with Liverpool also added: “Ramsdale is playing for Arsenal and he can’t even get in the England team.”

However, Schmeichel insisted that it wasn’t fully relevant to the discussion. He then praised the 25-year-old for the influence he has made at the Emirates Stadium since joining a little more than two years ago.

“That is a completely different debate and I don’t understand that,” Schmeichel responded. “But I think that he’s done tremendously well.

“What he’s done is he’s won me over. I think he’s a very, very consistent stable goalkeeper, he makes very very few mistakes.

“His actual goalkeeping, he’s done that fantastically. I just don’t get why Arteta wants to create this problem.”
