Qatar Bans Alcohol At World Cup Stadiums In Two Days Before Kick-Off

Fifa have banned the sale of alcohol at World Cup stadiums in Qatar barely 48 hours before the tournament kicks off, bowing to pressure from the kingdom’s all-powerful royal family.

According to The Times, FIFA and Qatari organisers were in late discussions over whether alcohol will be sold in stadiums during the event, which begins on Sunday.

In a statement, FIFA said: “Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licenced venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters.”

While supporters can purchase alcohol at official fan zones during the event, the sale of beer at matches has been a contentious topic.

Has FIFA Banned Alcohol At World Cup Stadiums?

Initially, it looked like an agreement had been reached to allow FIFA sponsors Budweiser to sell beer at the stadiums. This was later addressed in the run-up to the tournament after the New York Times first reported that, at the request of the hosts, the beer tents would be less visible at the grounds.

However, it has emerged that FIFA came under late pressure to ban alcohol sales in stadiums, just two days before hosts Qatar kick off the tournament against Ecuador on Sunday.

“There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar’s World Cup stadiums,” FIFA added.

“Host country authorities and FIFA will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans.

“The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev’s understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.”

The beer brand’s Twitter account posted ‘well, this is awkward…’ moments before Fifa announced that alcohol sales will be restricted to special ‘fan zones’ where pints will cost £12, will be available only at certain times, and will be limited to four per person.
