Race hots up for Napoli ace

Napoli are facing a battle to keep hold of Dries Mertens as a host of Serie A rivals line up a January swoop for the forward. The 32-year-old is due to fall out of contract at the end of the season and so far there is no sign of him penning a new one, which means he will be able to leave on a free transfer.
There will be no shortage of interest in Mertens and there is a chance that Napoli could have a decision to make when the transfer window opens in January.
Inter and AC Milan, along with Juventus, are all said to be in the hunt and Napoli could decide to cash in during the window in a bid to recoup some cash.
It would be a huge gamble to let him go halfway through the season, but with the Serie A title looking out of reach following a disappointing season, it is not beyond the realms of possibility.
All is not well at Napoli, who have not won in the last five Serie A games, and there is talk that boss Carlo Ancelotti is facing the axe unless things improve quickly.
Mertens has scored 116 goals in 297 appearances during his time at Napoli but could be ready to jump from a sinking ship if the likes of Juve come knocking.
Former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri is now in charge of the Old Lady, so it is no surprise to see rumours suggesting a reunion in Turin could be on the cards.
