Real Madrid Confirm Thibaut Courtois Knee Surgery Success

Thibaut Courtois suffered “a tear of the internal meniscus of his right knee” during a training session with his Spanish club on Tuesday, and Real Madrid has confirmed that he had successful knee surgery.

The Belgian missed the first game of the 2023–24 season because of an ACL injury he sustained before the team’s match against Athletic Bilbao.

Nevertheless, Courtois has been gradually regaining his fitness, and he was expected to play for Real Madrid following the March international break.

The goalie, who had injured his left knee back in August, tore the internal meniscus in his right knee on Tuesday, dealing him yet another severe blow to his already damaged knee.

“Under the direction of Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Thibaut Courtois underwent successful procedure today to repair tear in the internal meniscus of his right knee.

In the upcoming days, Courtois will start his recuperation,” the Spanish team said in statement on Wednesday morning.

After Courtois had a scan, Real Madrid announced the injury on Tuesday.

“Our player Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a tear of the internal meniscus in his right knee following the tests that were performed on him today. The incident happened during the training session today. A statement on Real Madrid’s official website stated, “Pending evolution.”

Sports Mole claims the goalie will now be looking to return next season as his recovery from his most recent injury is anticipated to take two to three months.

Real Madrid Current Situation

Since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois has made 230 appearances for the team across all competitions, including 49 during the 2022–2023 season.

Throughout his tenure at Bernabeu, the 31-year-old has won two La Liga championships, the Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

Eder Militao, who sustained an ACL injury in August, is expected to make comeback following the international break, but David Alaba, who suffered an ACL injury in December, will also miss the remainder of the campaign.

For the last few games of the season, Real Madrid will be strengthened by the return of crucial player, and Militao is expected to be included in the squad against Athletic the following weekend.

Andriy Lunin is anticipated to maintain his position as the top player for the balance of the season in Courtois’s absence.

Earlier in the season, Lunin and Chelsea’s on-loan goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga were alternating, but the Ukraine international has since made a name for himself as the number one option between the sticks.

Kepa is anticipated to return to his parent club at the end of the current season, so it is unlikely that he will sign a permanent deal with Real Madrid this summer.
