Real Madrid extend their unbeaten run to 30 games

No Real Madrid side has gone 35 consecutive matches without defeat and Zinedine Zidane’s 2016 charges are one step closer to doing just that.

Surviving the scare of having Sporting CP threaten a late comeback victory in their Champions League group stage fixture, Karim Benzema’s winner confirmed their 30th game in a row without defeat, of which 24 have been won and six drawn.

The 2-0 first leg defeat in April at Wolfsburg during the quarter-finals of last season’s competition is now a distant memory, especially as it gave way to a morale-boosting second leg triumph that spurred Los Blancos on to lift the cup.

To equal the run of Leo Beenhakker’s 1988/89 side, Real must bypass a LaLiga visit of Sporting Gijon and the return match with Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey, which come either side of the Clasico away to Barcelona and a European night with Borussia Dortmund.

If they overcome those tough clashes, Los Merengues can then make it 35 in the domestic outing against Deportivo La Coruna on December 10.
