Real Madrid show support for Ronaldo over tax fraud accusations

Real Madrid have publicly expressed their support for Cristiano Ronaldo after the winger was accused of defrauding the authorities of £12.9 million in unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2014.

The prosecutor’s office in Madrid said that it had filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo, but the Portugal international has denied the accusations.

Real have stated that they are convinced that Ronaldo has always demonstrated a willingness to comply with tax obligations and added that they are convinced that the 32-year-old will show his innocence during this process.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Real Madrid C. F. displays its full confidence in our player Cristiano Ronaldo, who we believe has acted in accordance with the legality in meeting their tax obligations.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has always shown since his arrival at the Real Madrid C. F., in July 2009, a clear willingness to comply with all their tax obligations.

“Real Madrid C. F. is absolutely convinced that our player Cristiano Ronaldo will demonstrate his total innocence in this process.

“Real Madrid C. F. hopes that the justice system to act as quickly as possible so that as soon as is demonstrated his innocence.”

It is claimed that Ronaldo didn’t declare income of £25m related to image rights.

It has also been claimed that Ronaldo reported income as coming from real estate, which reduced his tax rate significantly.

Ronaldo earned £72 million from salary, bonuses and endorsements in 2016 and is currently the world’s highest-paid sportsperson.

The current Ballon d’Or holder has been at Real since 2009, having joined the club from Manchester United.
