Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe has a crew dedicated to meticulously controlling his image, branding, and social media presence. The alarms must have been sounding at full blast when his Twitter/X account was hacked on Wednesday night in the early hours of the morning.
Mbappe account was taken over by an unknown hacker and, according to MD, was used for a variety of reasons over the course of 20 minutes. Part of it was to promote a cryptocurrency called $MBAPPE, which apparently surged in value briefly before crashing again.
The account was also used to verbally insult Lionel Messi, tweeting ‘Manchester is red’ and ‘I lied to you, I am coming to Manchester United. In 2028, I will travel there for free. Further posts included anti-Semitic sentiments, such as ‘The Jews are the owners of football’, as well as ‘F*** Israel’ and ‘Free Palestine’, implying both the hackers’ football and political preferences.
The posts went down within 20 minutes. According to CoinPedia, the value of the cryptocurrency has risen to tens of millions of dollars, with one user earning $200k (€180.5k) from $286 (€258). Within less than an hour, the value of $MBAPPE had returned to zero.
