Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the subject of a lucrative offer from China.
The 31-year-old recently became United’s all-time leading marksman when he scored his 250th goal for the Red Devils against Stoke City on Saturday.
With eighteen months left on his contract Chinese Super League officials, according to The Sun on Sunday, want to make Rooney the highest paid footballer on the planet with him earning £1m-a-week, which amounts to around £60m-per-year.
“There is a belief that Rooney might be allowed to leave United this summer, by which time he’ll have spent 13 years at the club and made more than 550 appearances,” a source in China told The Sun on Sunday.
“Even though he’ll have one year left on his contract, it’s a good time to go because he is now the TOP scorer in the club’s history.
“He would probably sign a two-year deal in China and will earn more in that time than he has done during the whole of his United career.
“It will be a big wrench for him and Coleen and their boys because they are very settled in Cheshire and Coleen in particular is very close to her family. The boys are happy at school.
“But they both know a footballer’s career is a short one and it would be silly for Wayne not to maximise his earning potential, especially as he’s approaching the latter stages of his career.”
It’s not the first time the Liverpudlian has been linked with a move to the Far East.
Beijing Guoan honorary chairman Luo Ning revealed Rooney turned down a chance to join them last November.
Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao, the wealthiest club in China, is reportedly one of the clubs interested in acquiring the services of the England international.
Rooney has in the past spoken of his desire to finish his playing career at United and if he was to leave the club prematurely he wouldn’t move toanother Premier League team.
