Report: Arsenal Explores The Return Of A Former Star

Arsenal are apparently mulling a surprise deal for former star Wojciech Szczesny, who ruffled feathers under Arsene Wenger, in an attempt to avoid violating Premier League homegrown player regulations. If Aaron Ramsdale leaves the club during the summer transfer window, the Gunners may look for a new goalkeeper.

Premier League regulations mandate that clubs include at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man squads at the start of each season. Arsenal named 11 players to their squad for the 2023-24 season, but others could be released.

Ramsdale, an England international, has been linked with a move away after losing his position as first-choice goalkeeper. There is also concern over whether David Raya, another native star, will have a loan deal finalized.

The interest in Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah, and Reiss Nelson is set to increase in the coming months. James Hillson, the 23-year-old goalkeeper, could also be on his way out, leaving Arsenal with only five homegrown players over the age of 21.

According to the Evening Standard, the north London club intends to address this issue by signing a native goalkeeper. Szczesny, a club academy product who has played 181 professional appearances, is apparently being considered with Brighton’s Jason Steele, according to the Express.

The Poland international has been at Juventus since leaving Arsenal in 2017, although his tenure at Arsenal was marred by scandal. Szczesny’s Arsenal career came to an abrupt end after a smoking incident during a 2-0 loss to Southampton in 2015.

“Somebody saw me, it wasn’t even the boss himself, and just reported it back to the boss. I saw him a couple of days later – he asked me if that was true and I said, ‘yes’.
