REPORT: Arsenal moved for Vardy after Man United didn’t want him

Arsenal reportedly made their move for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy after rivals Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign him.

Accordint to reports Arsenal have activated the £20 million release clause in Vardy’s contract, as they look to strengthen their front line.

The release clause was inserted in the four-year contract Vardy signed in February and he would be Arsenal’s second signing after the arrival of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.

However, Sky Sports report that Arsenal only went in for Vardy after Man United had pulled out of any deal to sign the England international.

The report adds that new United managerJose Mourinho only wants one striker this summer, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and he has faith in talented youngster Marcus Rashford.

Vardy scored 24 goals in the league last season, second only to international team-mate Harry Kane, and he played a key role in helping Leicester to an improbable Champions League triumph.

The 29-year-old has scored three goals for England and could start his country in the upcoming European Championships, although he faces competition from Kane and captain Wayne Rooney.

In the last friendly before the Euros start Rooney started in the most advanced role, with Kane and Vardy playing out wide.
