Real Madrid star Gareth Bale has become the highest paid footballer in the world after signing a new contract with Los Blancos.
Bale has signed a three-year contract extension that could potentially see him remain with the current Champions League holders until 2022.
The 27-year-old is set to earn £150m in salaries and bonuses over the next six years, meaning that he will receive £350,000 per week after tax. A €1bn buyout clause has also been included in the new deal.
A Real club statement reads, as reported by The Guardian: “Real Madrid and Gareth Bale have agreed to the extension of the player’s contract, which ties him to the club until June 30, 2022.”
Bale has been linked with a return to the Premier League, and a potential move to Old Trafford, but this deal will surely put an end to that speculation.
Real are also in the process of agreeing a new contract with Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently earns an estimated £288,000 per week after tax.
In recent weeks Real Madrid have also secured the long-term future of Toni Kross, Lucas Vasquez and Luka Modric.
