David Luiz’s return to Chelsea from Paris Saint-Germain was reportedly forced through by the player’s wishes, while the Blues also made a failed bid for his teammate, Marquinhos.
The Brazil international re-joined the Blues before the transfer window closed on Wednesday evening, after the two clubs agreed on a fee earlier in the day.
However, according to Sky Sports, PSG were initially unwilling to sell Luiz. The defender then asked for a move on Tuesday, which set the transfer in motion.
Furthermore, the source suggests that a Chelsea offer for fellow central defender and compatriot Marquinhos was turned down by the Parisian giants.
Luiz left Stamford Bridge shortly before the 2014 World Cup in his home nation, for a world-record transfer fee for a defender.
He has enjoyed great success in France, claiming winners’ medals twice in Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and and the Coupe de la Ligue in his two seasons at the club.
The 29-year-old became manager Antonio Conte’s second signing of deadline day, after Marcos Alonso, and the fourth overall this summer following the arrivals of Michy Batshuayi and N’Golo Kante.
Luiz is now set to challenge the likes of Gary Cahill and John Terry for a place in the side, though could also be utilised in a defensive midfield role.
Luiz can look forward to making his first appearance of his second spell at the club against Swansea City after the international break, before a home fixture against Liverpool.
