Manchester United fans slammed Michael Olivier for his refereeing display during their 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Chelsea and legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson was no different in his assessment of the official.
Jose Mourinho suggested Olivier’s decision to send Ander Herrera off in the 35th minute ruined the encounter and N’Golo Kante scored the only goal of the game not long after the incident at Stamford Bridge.
Ferguson, like Mourinho, was no shrinking violet over the course of his 26-year stint at Old Trafford, and the 75-year-old was forced to hold his tongue when asked about the refereeing.
‘I wish I could swear about the referee but I won’t!’ Ferguson told the BBC at Cheltenham Festival following United’s loss.
To make matters worse for the Red Devils, the club was charged by the FA for failing to control their players during the tie.
Several stars surrounded the referee following Herrera’s second booking and United have until March 17 to appeal the charge.
However, it appears Marcos Rojo has escaped punishment from the FA for a ‘stamp’ on Hazard in the second-half.
