Manchester United handed Alexis Sanchez a £9million payoff as part of his free transfer to Inter Milan.
United were said to be very satisfied at the outcome considering Sanchez would have earned about £50m under his contract at Old Trafford that had nearly two years to run.
The Premier League club also waived a transfer fee so that Inter could turn Sanchez’s loan at the San Siro into a permanent move and sign the Chile star on a three-year deal worth £130,000-a-week.
It is less than Sanchez’s contract at United, which was worth up to £560,000-a-week and made him the highest-paid player in the Premier League, but he was desperate to stay in Italy.
Sanchez is now free to continue playing for the Italians in the Europa League and could even face United in Cologne if both clubs make it through to the final on August 21.
United have now freed up a large chunk of their wage bill, and the club’s iconic No 7 shirt, in anticipation of Jadon Sancho’s move from Borussia Dortmund.
