Richarlison Racially Abused With Banana In Brazil Friendly Win Over Tunisia

During Tuesday’s friendly match between Brazil and Tunisia in Paris, Tottenham striker Richarlison had a banana thrown at him by a fan.

The incident happened when the former Everton striker raced towards the corner flag to celebrate scoring his team’s second goal in a 5-1 victory at Parc des Princes.

The banana was kicked away by Manchester United player Fred as more items were tossed into the field.

Richarlison’s goal had placed Brazil back in front after Montassar Talbi had cancelled out Raphinha’s opener.

Neymar added a penalty, Raphinha added his second, and Pedro completed the scoring after Tunisia’s Dylan Bronn was sent off.

Meanwhile, speaking after the match, Richarlison said racism would continue if there was no punishment handed out.

“As long as they keep ‘blah blah blah’ and don’t punish, it’s going to continue like this.

“Happening every day and in every corner,” he added.

Prior to the game, Brazil had posed for pictures holding a sign against racism that read, “Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts.”

After the match, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) released a statement on Twitter. The statement denounced the mistreatment of Richarlison and urged for severe penalties.

It read: “After Brazil’s second goal, a banana was thrown towards Richarlison. The CBF reinforces its stance against discrimination and vehemently repudiates yet another episode of racism in football.

“Whether on or off the field, attitudes like this cannot be tolerated.”
