Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says Manchester City are still Liverpool’s closest rivals for the title despite their nine-point gap. The Reds defeated City 3-1 on Sunday in what could be the most pivotal result of the season so far.
An early goal from Fabinho helped settle the nerves as he cracked in a stunner off the back of a controversial decision not to award City a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Then, after 13 minutes, Mo Salah headed in to make it 2-0 following a swift counter-attack.
Liverpool were in a great position and capitalised on City’s uncharacteristically poor defence to make it 3-0 just after half time.
Jordan Henderson’s delightful ball found Sadio Mane at the back post as he nodded in from close range.
A late goal from Bernardo Silva proved to only be a consolation as the gap has now increased to nine points, with the Reds now extremely strong favourites to win their first-ever Premier League title.
They are top on 34 points with City now in the fourth on 25 points, as Leicester City and Chelsea are both sandwiched in between on 26 points.
However, Robertson is still wary of the threat that Guardiola’s team can pose and believes they are the main rivals to their Premier League title challenge. “Both of us were in a league of their own last year and it looks as if there’s going to be a couple of others sniffing about this year. But I still believe if you finish above Man City then I think you’ll get the title,” he said. “It’s a massive win for us and it’s just another one that we’ve got to tick off. There’s still a long, long way to go, but it’s always nice to beat your rivals.”
After the international break, Liverpool travel to Crystal Place on November 23 before City host Chelsea later that afternoon in what could be described as a must-win game.
