Rodgers urges Leicester to ‘drop a grenade’ on the big six

Brendan Rodgers is hopeful his Leicester City side can again shake up the Premier League’s big six and become a long-term force in the division. The Foxes stunned the world of football in 2015-16 when they won the Premier League title under charismatic boss Claudio Ranieri.
Three years on and the club is again disrupting the established order following a strong start to the campaign under Rodgers, whose side sit third going into Saturday evening’s King Power Stadium clash with fifth-placed Arsenal.
Although still early days on his reign, Rodgers’ aim is for the Foxes to be continually in the mix, not just every now and again. “It’s sometimes been the trend that if something happens that wakes them (the big six) up, then they have that facility to go and spend and get a level of player that can get them back up there,” assessed Rodgers. “So you have to fight. You can’t accept what is the top six, in terms of finance, and that you are always going to sit below it. We have to hopefully find a way and drop a hand grenade in there, and see where it takes us.”
Rodgers accepts Leicester do not have the same level of resources as the teams that he is looking to rival.
But the Northern Irishman, who left Celtic to take over at Leicester from the sacked Claude Puel in February, is “excited” at the challenge of trying to “break the mould” and create a team that can consistently challenge in the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Rodgers highlighted that the club’s ownership and fanbase, along with a planned stadium extension and new training facility, are creating a fantastic infrastructure, which should allow them to generate “a new history”.
A win against Arsenal would move the Foxes six points clear of Unai Emery’s side and ahead of reigning champions Manchester City, who face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
