Ronaldo Admits End Of Career After Bursting Into Tears Following Missed Penalty

Portugal icon, Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted the 2024 Euros in Germany will be his last European Championship.

The Portugal national team captain, who made history in Germany as the first player to compete in six Euros, has announced that he will not be participating in the tournament in the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2028, when he will be 43 years old.

Ronaldo made his statement on a trying night that included him missing a lot of opportunities in his team’s match against Slovenia in the round of 16 in Frankfurt and crying as Slovenian goalie Jan Oblak stopped his penalty in extra time.

In the end, Ronaldo got back up to score his own penalty, and Diogo Costa’s three saves ensured that Portugal won.

Speaking to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo as cited by The Mirror after the match, Ronaldo said: “It is, without doubt, my last European Championship.

“But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by all that football means — by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me.

“It’s not about leaving the world of football. What else is there for me to do or win? It’s not going to come down to one point more or one point less. Making people happy is what motivates me the most.”
