Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has caused outrage on social media by posting an image of him placing his foot on a Buddhist statue.
Ronaldo became embroiled in some huge online beef on Thursday morning, when he uploaded a picture of him and a statue of Buddha onto Instagram and Facebook.
There’s nothing wrong with that, you might think, until you notice just where Ronaldo has placed his famous right foot.
Because by placing it upon the statue of the deity worshipped as a father figure of Buddhism, he has caused OUTRAGE amongst the religion’s followers.

Such actions are deemed extremely disrespectful in the Buddhist community and many, as reported by Goal, demanded that the Portugal international take the image down from his official Instagram account.
Despite one response stating: ‘Hey Cristiano, are you crazy? Buddha is not for decoration’ as of writing, Ronaldo is yet to remove the photo and it remains to be seen if he will.
Although Buddhism is seen as famously peaceful, the Buddhists saw this as Ronaldo showing huge disrespect.
And they weren’t slow to let Ronaldo know about it on social media.
Here are just a selection of the (cleanest) tweets sent to Ronaldo:

Now he surely didn’t do this on purpose, but people are NOT happy.
He might just have cost himself a few fans.
