Ronaldo equals Platini’s record for most European Championship goals

Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal against Wales takes him to nine goals at European Championships, level with former France midfielder Michel Platini.

Ronaldo scored twice for Portugal in the group stage when they drew 3-3 wth Hungary but he drew a blank in the games against Croatia and Poland.

He opened the scoring against Wales with a towering header from a corner and he moves to nine goals at the Euros, which is level with Platini, although the Frenchman scored all of his during the sole 1984 tournament, which Les Bleus won.

Ronaldo has now scored 10 of his 12 goals at major tournaments in the second half and he is already the first player to score at four separate Euros.

The 31-year-old now has 61 goals for Portugal and moments after he had scored Portugal doubled their lead when Nani, who this week secured a three-year move to Valencia, poked home in the box.

Should Portugal win this they will claim victory inside 90 minutes for the first time in the tournament, having drawn three group games and relying on an extra-time win and penalties in the knockout stages.

The winners of this game will face either the reigning world champions Germany or the hosts France, who will play in their semi-final on Thursday evening.
