Ronaldo receives five-match ban

Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for five matches after being sent off for committing a second bookable offence and then pushing the referee in Real Madrid’s 3-1 Supercopa de Espana first-leg victory over Barcelona on Sunday.

The attacker had just put Real ahead in the 80th minute only to be shown a second yellow card two minutes later.

Ronaldo’s first booking was for ripping off his shirt in celebration and the referee brandished the second after the Portugal international went down under a challenge from Samuel Umtiti in the box.

The referee, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, decided Ronaldo had dived and issued the goalscorer with his marching orders with Real 2-1 up with eight minutes to play.

Ronaldo was furious with the decision and shoved the referee as he left the pitch in frustration.

Bengoetxea included the incident in his report and Ronaldo could now miss between four and 12 games through suspension.

‘Player: Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro. Once the red card was shown, the player pushed me slightly in a sign of disagreement,’ said Bengoetxea in his report.
