Cristiano Ronaldo‘s brace against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday means the Real Madrid forward has now scored 50-plus goals in his last six consecutive seasons.
Ronaldo’s Los Blancos headed into the final day of the campaign needing a win at Estadio Riazor in order to stand any chance of wresting the league title back off Barcelona, who they were praying slipped up against Granada.
But despite scoring twice in a 2-0 final-day victory, Ronaldo’s efforts were eventually fruitless as a Luis Suarez hat-trick ensured Luis Enrique’s men retained their crown by one mere point after 38 matches.
Suarez’s trio of strikes will see him finish as La Liga’s 2015/16 top scorer – barring a minor miracle in Sunday’s remaining top-flight fixtures – but despite being outscored by 40 to 35, Ronaldo reached 50-plus goals in all competitions for the sixth year in a row – a quite staggering achievement.
Ronaldo outscored his main nemesis, Lionel Messi, by nine goals, although he did manage to play three more matches as the Argentinian struggled with injury earlier on in the term.
Five of Ronaldo’s 30 strikes came from outside the box, whilst he also scored nine in total with his head – a total bettered only be team-mate Gareth Bale (9) across the whole division.
With Real’s hopes of league success now gone, he will be hoping to carry his fine goalscoring form over to the Champions League as Zinedine Zidane’s charges meet with neighbouring Atletico Madrid at the end of the month in the season finale.
