Rooney is welcome at Everton – Koeman

Ronald Koeman has confirmed Everton‘s interest in signing Manchester United centre forward Wayne Rooney in the summer.

Rooney has been with the 20-time Premier League champions since making his well-documented move from Everton in 2004 and has since gone on to break a number of records with the club.

In January he became their outright all-time top goalscorer with 250 goals – overtaking the number previously held by Sir Bobby Charlton – with the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Stoke.

However, with his game-time proving less frequent over the last few years, the England international could be on his way out
with a move to either the Chinese Super League or a return to former club Everton the most likely outcome.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Koeman declared his interest in signing Rooney, admitting that he would improve the squad if available.

“I still think Wayne Rooney is playing at a high level and he made a good choice staying at Manchester United and in the Premier League,” said Koeman.

“He still has two or three years in front of him to play at the highest level. What will happen at the end of the season, I do not know. In my opinion he’s one of the players who can make Everton stronger than they are now.

“It’s all about what the player likes, what Manchester United need to do and we are not involved in that project. Every player who we feel can make the team stronger is welcome [at] Everton.”

Everton take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane this weekend as they look to solidify their place amongst the Europa League spots.
