Giuseppe Rossi‘s agent believes that the striker made a mistake in deciding to represent Italy rather than the United States.
Rossi was born in America to Italian parents, but he hasn’t been selected for the Azzurri since 2014 and didn’t come into contention for a place in Antonio Conte’s squad for Euro 2016.
As reported by the Guardian, Rossi’s agent Andrea Pastorello said: “In hindsight, going back to when he chose between representing Italy or the USA, we should have chosen the USA.”
Rossi turned down the opportunity to attend a United States training camp as a youngster, and may well now regret that decision when his current predicament is taken into consideration.
The forward made his senior debut for Italy in 2008 and has been capped by his country on 30 occasions but he may have made many more international appearances had he chosen to represent the United States.
Rossi has been unable to fulfil the vast potential that he demonstrated as a youngster. After leaving Manchester United, he spent five years with Villarreal before moving on to Fiorentina. Rossi spent the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Levante, and scored eight goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.
It remains to be seen what happens to Rossi at club level next season. The forward is out of contract at the end of June and is likely to be available on a free transfer.
