Roy Keane: Europa League snub is “final nail in the coffin” for Rooney

Roy Keane believes Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United career is over.

The Red Devils skipper returned to the United squad for their Europa League quarter-final second leg with Anderlecht after an ankle injury.

But despite United needing a goal – and Zlatan Ibrahimovic limping off with a knee problem – Jose Mourinho didn’t turn to Rooney.

Marcus Rashford eventually won it for the Red Devils in extra-time as they progressed to the semi-finals.

Rooney has been heavily linked with a return to Everton in the summer, although Mourinho has admitted he hopes to keep him at Old Trafford.

But Keane sees no future for United’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“In terms of the bigger picture, that is the end of Wayne at United,” he told ITV Sport.

“He will contribute from now until the end of the season but that is the final nail in the coffin for him.

“He must be fuming, he’ll be like a mad man. If he isn’t then he has lost the eye of the tiger.”

United have been joined by Ajax, Celta Vigo and Lyon in the last four.

Keane believes the French side pose the biggest threat to Mourinho’s men as they look to return to the Champions League.
