Rummenigge can’t believe Manchester United’s treatment of Schweinsteiger

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is in disbelief over Manchester United’s supposed ill treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The midfielder has trained with the Red Devils’ Under-21 side in recent days, after widespread reports claimed that he had been told to leave the club by Jose Mourinho.

Rummenigge responded to those reports by opening the door on a potential return to Bayern, though new manager Carlo Ancelotti has since quashed any thought of a homecoming for Schweinsteiger.

The Bavarian super-club’s chief is clearly still concerned by the plight of his former player, though, insisting that such a scenario would “never” occur at Bayern.

As reported by Die Welt, ex-striker Rummenigge said: “When I read this, I can hardly believe it.

“At Bayern Munich it has never been [like this], and with Bayern Munich it never will be.”

Schweinsteiger was brought to Old Trafford by Louis van Gaal – one of his former Bayern coaches – last summer, on a £200,000-per-week contract.

However, the transfer was largely considered a failure, as the Germany international struggled for both form and fitness.

He failed to register an assist across all competitions, creating a total of nine chances for his teammates.

The 32-year-old also succumbed to two separate knocks in the latter half of the campaign, causing him to play a mere 21 minutes of Premier League football since 3rd January.

Mourinho’s pursuit of Juventus superstar Paul Pogba will further dent Schweinsteiger’s faint hopes of securing a place in the United squad, given the raft of central midfielders now available to the Portuguese.
