Schalke missed out on the chance to go top of the Bundesliga as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Hoffenheim on Sunday afternoon. It is the second time that David Wagner’s men have failed to take top spot after they were held to a 1-1 draw against Cologne just before the international break.
Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, Leipzig and Freiburg all dropped points over the weekend, but, unfortunately for Wagner and his men, they could not take advantage.
Substitute Ihlas Bebou was the hero for the home side as he scored one goal and created another to end Schalke’s seven-game unbeaten away record and keep them off top spot.
Former Huddersfield Town boss Wagner was not too despondent with his side’s performance as he felt they had played well, but the result was not what he was after. “Hoffenheim deserved to win because they scored two goals and we didn’t,” Wagner told reporters after the game. “The team that scores the goals wins the game, not the team who plays better. “Despite that, it was a good performance away from home for 70 minutes. We played well in the first half and had a lot of chances. “Hoffenheim then switched to five at the back after the break. They sat back and played on the counter. We’ve rarely played teams who have sat so deep. “Our goal was to get into space in the final third, but we didn’t manage that today. We will learn from this.”
