World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger has praised Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini as ‘the best centre-backs in the world’ after Italy’s 2-1 win over Belgium.
The Azzurri are through to the semi-finals of EURO 2020 after the success in Munich on Friday night and veterans Chiellini and Bonucci helped the Azzurri control the game from the heart of the defence.
Chiellini and Bonucci are 70 years old combined and have together played 217 games for the Nazionale, .
Chiellini, who’s contract with Juventus expired on June 30, recovered in time to make his 110th appearance for the Azzurri against Belgium.
Former Germany international Schweinsteiger believes he and Bonucci, who has played 107 times with the Azzurri, are currently the best centre-backs in the world.
“Bonucci and Chiellini are currently the best centre-backs in the world,” Schweinsteiger wrote on Twitter. “Experience.”
Italy have set up a semi-final meeting with Spain in the battle for a place in the Final at Wembley.
The Azzurri are aiming to win the Euros for the second time in history, with the only triumph arriving in 1968.
