Schweinsteiger told he has no future at Manchester United

It’s been reported that Bastian Schweinsteiger was the high-profile victim of Jose Mourinho’s “clear-out Thursday” at Manchester United, being told he can leave the club this summer.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Schweinsteiger was one of nine players informed personally by Mourinho that they had no future at Old Trafford, being made to train with the U21s away from the first-team squad. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Adnan Januzaj were just some of the other names on the list.

This comes just a year after the German international arrived at United from Bayern Munich, enduring an injury-hit debut season in the Premier League under Louis van Gaal. The newspaper reports that he has two years left on his current deal, worth £160,000-a-week, but the Red Devils are hopeful that won’t put off any potential suitors.

Although the 31-year-old featured for Germany at Euro 2016 this summer, his last league appearance came back in March in the Manchester derby, playing 21 minutes of United’s 1-0 win at City. With that in mind, many had speculated that he could be one of the first casualties of the Mourinho era at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger made 18 Premier League appearances, scoring one goal and creating eight chances, winning 45% of his average duels and with an average pass accuracy of 85%.

Meanwhile the Portuguese has already recruited the trio of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, while Paul Pogba remains a target, as the club attempts to return to the upper echelons of the Premier League as soon as possible.
