Scott McTominay has acknowledged that the coaching staff at Man United made mistakes when he first entered the first squad, which may have prevented the team’s supporters from seeing his best.

During his eight years in the United senior squad, McTominay faced criticism from supporters and commentators, but since joining Napoli in a £25 million deal last summer, he has been a revelation.

McTominay has accumulated ten goal involvements in 26 league games with Napoli.

It is more than the eight games he managed in the Premier League last season, half of which came in just two appearances against Brentford and Chelsea, with eight games remaining in the Serie A title fight.

McTominay was generally considered a defensive or deep-lying midfielder at United, reports 90 min.

He said: “When I got into the first team, I was quite mis-profiled in where I was playing.”

“My strengths have always been getting into the box, scoring goals, being a problem in there. But I was being used as a No 6, or as a centre-back, and that has never really been my game.

Lancashire-born McTominay was just five years of age when was originally discovered as a prospect by Man United.
