Sevilla Sack Head Coach Ahead Of Europa League Showdown With Man United

On Tuesday, Sevilla dismissed head coach Jorge Sampaoli after being two points above the LaLiga danger zone.

Four of Sevilla’s last seven league games have ended in defeat, including a humiliating 6-1 loss to Atletico Madrid.

Despite having advanced to the quarterfinals of the Europa League. They are currently 14th in LaLiga with 28 points and 12 games remaining after losing 2-0 to Getafe on Sunday.

“Following (the) defeat at Getafe, which leaves the side just above the relegation zone, the club have decided to part ways with the Argentine coach ahead of the international break,” Sevilla said in a statement.

“Sampaoli will no longer lead today’s training session… while the club is already working on recruiting a new coach as soon as possible.”

The 63-year-old Argentine managed the Argentina national team from 2017 to 2018 in addition to managing Sevilla in the 2016–2017 campaign.

Sampaoli was the head coach of Chile during the 2014 world cup tournament in Brazil. He also won the 2015 Copa America when Chile defeated Argentina in the final.

Sevilla are record six-times Europa League winners and next face Manchester United. Their first LaLiga game after the international break is at 15th-placed Cadiz on April 1.
