Shearer Advises Newcastle Star To Retire Following Cup Win Against Liverpool

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer reportedly made a light joke to Dan Burn following his goal in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool.

Last weekend, Burn helped the Magpies win their first domestic trophy in seven decades when he opened the scoring in a historic 2-1 triumph over the Reds at Wembley.

Despite being one of Newcastle’s greatest players ever, Shearer was never able to win a title with the north-east team.

Shearer, who wrote about the match and Burn’s contribution to the triumph for BBC Sport, made a joke about telling the 32-year-old that he might as well retire after scoring in a cup final.

However, Shearer overlooked the fact that Burn had just received his first England call-up, suggesting that the former Brighton player’s future may be in the balance.

“I would love to see big Dan Burn make his England debut this week and maybe he can find the Wembley net for his country as well as his club,” Shearer said.

“I’d forgotten about his England call-up when I spoke to him on Sunday night and said ‘you might as well retire mate because it is not going to get any better than this’.

“He went ‘well, you never know… something might happen on Friday’ and he is right. That’s the story of his career really, because he has done the hard yards to get here, and have moments like this for the first time at the age of 32.”

After that amazing outcome on Sunday, Newcastle supporters will still be ecstatic, and they will undoubtedly be cheering for Burn as he gets ready to play for the England national team.
