Following England’s fortunate win over Slovakia in the Round of 16 of the 2024 Euros, Alan Shearer stated that the Three Lions while under the leadership of Gareth Southgate will always be hard to watch and should not expect anything different.
Jude Bellingham’s incredible goal kept England’s team from an embarrassing summertime European Championship last-16 loss to Slovakia, and Southgate’s team was forever grateful to him for it.
The game went into overtime after Bellingham’s incredible overhead kick in response to Marc Guehi’s long throw in the 95th minute. The national team avoided the shame of one of its most humiliating losses in history when Harry Kane met Ivan Toney’s headed cross to seal victory.
Though there was a feeling of relief and rescue, this was just another bad show from England. Exhibiting all the traits of dysfunction and lethargy brought up earlier.
According to The Mirror, ex-England striker Shearer thinks that Southgate has always used these kinds of negative tactics, amid criticism for what many see as his negative tactics.

“It was another hard watch from then on until the final whistle,” Shearer wrote in a column for the BBC. “No-one wants to see us drop deep like that, but we have to accept that is the way Gareth Southgate wants us to play.
“The evidence is there now that this is who we are, and this is our identity in major finals. The evidence is there now that this is who we are, and this is our identity in major finals.”
