Premier League legend, Alan Shearer has reportedly urged David de Gea to sign for Newcastle United in the January transfer window.
The Magpies suffered an embarrassing setback in their 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park on Boxing Day.
Key players for the Premier League side have sustained injuries that have severely impacted their season. Nick Pope, the goalkeeper, will miss four months due to a dislocated shoulder.
Shearer thinks de Gea is the best option if Newcastle decide to press ahead with a goalkeeping acquisition during the transfer window that opens next month.
After being cut loose by Manchester United in the summer, the Spanish goalkeeper has been free to sign with any team.
What Did Shearer Say About Newcastle Priorities?
According to CaughtOffside, the Newcastle icon said on BBC Radio 5 Live:
“I would agree goalkeeper and centre forward would be the two main priorities for me.
“But good luck trying to find a good centre forward that you can bring in for a decent amount of money.”
When asked whether he would sign De Gea for the team, he replied, “Yeah, I would.
“I think Newcastle need a goalkeeper, and De Gea is out there. I know the salary would be huge but they wouldn’t have to pay a fee for him.”
Eddie Howe made it plain following the Boxing Day loss to Forest that he is aware of the club’s lengthy injury list and how it is hurting his team.

“Whenever you lose games it is an uncomfortable feeling, when your team is not at its peak,” Howe said.
“You deal with a lot of emotions when you don’t get the result you want. I am feeling that. I like to keep my thoughts and analyse properly and make tweaks and changes.”
