Silva reserves special praise for Everton’s Davies

Everton coach Marco Silva has described midfielder Tom Davies as ‘something special’ after Saturday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United. The Toffees moved up to 14th in the Premier League table and eased the pressure on Silva thanks to their dominant performance over the Hammers.
Everton had lost four successive matches in the top flight to Bournemouth, Sheffield United, Manchester City and Burnley before Saturday’s success.
Playmaker Bernard opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Gylfi Sigurdsson finally eased fans’ fears with a stunning strike in the 92nd minute. Davies was handed his first league start of the season, and he made a huge contribution next to former Barcelona star Andre Gomes.
Former England forward Theo Walcott also caught the eye as he grabbed an assist for Bernard’s goal in just his second start of the season.
However, Silva decided to single out local-boy Davies, and he believes his contribution needs to not go unnoticed.
He told the Liverpool Echo: “I like Tom as a lad. Tom is something special for me because he loves the club, he is a lad from our club, and he is special, it doesn’t matter if he’s played ten or thirty games for me. “Theo is an example as a professional. The way they played really impressed me.”
Davies has now made 77 appearances for his boyhood club since graduating from the club’s academy in 2015. The Liverpool-born ace has scored four goals in that time, and he will be hoping to keep hold of his spot in the starting XI.
He has never been called up to the England senior squad, but a good end to the Premier League campaign may tempt Gareth Southgate to call him up in time for the European Championships in 2020.
Davies has featured for England at every level from Under-16 to Under-21, but he is competing with the likes of Fabian Delph and Morgan Schneiderlin for a starting spot.
