Diego Simeone revealed that he’s “not surprised” a club like Manchester United are interested in signing Antoine Griezmann, following speculation over his future at Atletico Madrid.
The Independent recently reported that United are increasingly confident of signing Griezmann in the summer transfer window, for what would be a world-record fee, as Jose Mourinho continues to restructure his squad at Old Trafford.
Furthermore, the newspaper adds that no.7 star has verbally agreed a perspective deal with the Red Devils.
The France international has continued to flourish under the tutelage of Simeone at the Vicente Calderon in recent years, culminating in some stunning performances domestically and in Europe. Meanwhile, he also starred for Les Bleus at Euro 2016, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer, despite losing to Portugal in the final.
Griezmann is still arguably Atletico’s most important player, with his value continuing to rise each week, so the recent interest from clubs such as United haven’t surprised Simeone.
“I don’t tie anyone down, I simply keep working to continue getting better for the sake of the club,” the Atletico boss said (via AS). “He is in an extraordinary moment, is working well, has gotten back on the score-sheet and his form is good.
“It is normal that the best teams in the world want him. I am not surprised that the teams who are looking are the ones who can afford him.”
The 25-year-old has scored seven goals and created 27 chances in 17 La Liga appearances this season, with a shot accuracy of 59%, as Los Rojiblancos sit fourth on 34 points, four behind Barcelona in third.
Next up for them is a home clash with Eibar in the Copa del Rey quarter-final on Thursday night, before taking on Athletic Club at the San Mamés Stadium this weekend.
