Director of rugby Kevin Sinfield says he is delighted captain Trent Merrin will stay at Leeds Rhinos for the 2020 Super League season. Australia forward Merrin looked to be on his way out of the West Yorkshire outfit after he was given permission by the club to secure a move back Down Under for compassionate reasons, just one season into a four-year deal. However, the 30-year-old has decided to stick with the Rhinos for the 2020 Super League campaign and will now link up the squad in November in time for the start of pre-season training. Speaking after the announcement that Merrin will remain in Leeds, Sinfield told the club website: “He is looking forward to getting back and is raring to go again. “During last season Trent had to return home to Australia for some personal family reasons, and given those issues at the end of the season we gave him the opportunity to look to see if he could source a deal with a club closer to home. “He had our full support in doing this, but we knew there was also a strong part of him that wanted to come back.”
