Aston Villa boss Dean Smith felt wingers Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet were superb against Liverpool and has challenged the duo to maintain that level. The Villans looked to have done enough to earn a famous victory over the European champions after Trezeguet opened his Villa account in the 21st minute.
However, the Reds are not top of the Premier League table for nothing, with late strikes by Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane ensuring the points went back to Anfield and the West Midlanders’ fans returned home disappointed.
It was heartbreaking for those in claret and blue inside Villa Park as the hosts had more than matched Jurgen Klopp’s charges for much of the game to belie their lowly position in the top-flight standings.
The two wide men caused the opposition problems throughout the 90 minutes and Smith is eager for the pair to keep up the good work every time they take to the pitch. “They are the levels I want them to know they have now,” he said. “Those are the levels I want going into each and every game.”
Pressure was mounting on Trezeguet after his a £8.75million summer move from Kasimpasa, as the Egypt international had drawn a blank in nine previous Premier League appearances, but he stepped up to the plate last weekend.
The 25-year-old had played down his lack of goals but Smith believes that the African will have been relieved to finally find the back of the net. “I was pleased for Trez,” he added. “He will probably say it wasn’t getting to him but you could see there was an anxiety because it had been so long without a goal.”
Next up for Villa is a trip to Molineux to take on Nuno Espirito Santo’s improving Wolves in a West Midlands derby on Sunday afternoon, having already beaten them in the Carabao Cup.
