Steve Smith is set to return to the Big Bash League after a six-year hiatus, having rejoined Sydney Sixers for the next edition. The former Australia captain is expected to play in at least two group games for the Sixers in January, around his nation’s international commitments, and be available for the finals if his team make it all the way. “I am excited about getting an opportunity to play for the Sydney Sixers again,” Smith said. “When the schedule came out and I saw there was a chance to wear the Magenta again, I jumped at the opportunity and look forward to joining up with the team after my January national team commitments have ended.” Currently the world’s number one-ranked Test batsman, Smith returned to the Baggy Green’s T20I set-up last month after three-and-a-half years. Long-term, he will be looking to nail down a place in their T20 side ahead of next year’s ICC World T20 tournament on Aussie soil. To accommodate Smith, the Sydney franchise have parted ways with wicket-keeper Peter Nevill, who had joined the Sixers from Melbourne Renegades in a multi-year deal in 2017.
