Southgate early favourite to replace Hodgson after England boss resigns

Gareth Southgate was installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Roy Hodgson, who quit on Monday night after the humiliating 2-1 defeat by Iceland eliminated England from Euro 2016.

Southgate, 45, the Under 21 manager, heads a list including Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew and Eddie Howe of Bournemouth. It is believed the FA want an English manager.

Retired defender Rio Ferdinand wants to be part of any future set-up and could replace his old team-mate Gary Neville in the backroom staff.

Neville quit last night, too, and followed Hodgson and Ray Lewington out of the door.

Neville has now lost two jobs this season after also leaving his post as coach of Valencia. He is expected to return to punditry with Sky TV.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is 16-1, out of work David Moyes 25-1 and foreign managers on the list include Arsene Wenger and Jurgen Klinsmann.
