England manager Gareth Southgate has spoken out on his decision to drop Trent Alexander-Arnold against Germany. The Liverpool full-back’s unexpected absence from the England team for Monday’s Nations League match against Germany caught everyone off guard.
The 23-year-old averages 2.7 chances per game and has produced more chances this season than any other English full-back. However, he was left out of the squad list by Southgate.

The England boss has now revealed why he dropped the Liverpool star from the Germany match squad list.
What Did The England Boss Say On Alexander-Arnold Omission?
“I mean, we’ve got a big squad with us and we’ve got four right-backs who are super quality,” Southgate told Channel 4.
“At the moment Kieran Trippier is playing exceptionally well and Reece James has been one of the outstanding players in the Premier League at the start of the season.
“But Trent is a very, very good footballer and that’s why we picked him in the [initial] squad.”

Alexander-Arnold is clearly lower on Southgate’s priority list ahead of the World Cup. For now, it’s unclear if he will make the final roster for the tournament in Qatar.
On the other hand, the England manager is being closely watched leading up to the competition. He has recently come under fire for his cautious approach.
